Umm - hi, I'm Mel. Pleased to meet you!

- How should I call you, Mel?

I'd be happy if you called me Mel, just like now! I like being called by my first name!

- Well, then, Mel - tell us about the country where you live!

I go to university in America, so I go back and forth between the room I rent near my university and my home. When I get kinda busy with my research, I can't go back home much, and I get lonely...

- I see...where does your family live?

My family? They live in a beautiful little island island in Micronesia. They say "Micronesia" is Greek for "tiny islands"! Ha, ha, and they are!

- Cool! I'd sure like to go see it... How's university life for you?

Umm...the teachers treat me nice, and I enjoy my research. Also, I have lots of book, which I think is fun! Other than that...... (lost in thought)

- Universities have so many people, and it's tough until you get used to it!

Yeah, I guess. I haven't gotten used to being around so many people who aren't family. ...I can't really talk that well yet with the people in the research lab. I think to myself, "you can't be shy!", but still.

- Word on the street is that you're a boy genius...

I don't really understand why, but that's what they tell me. I don't think I am. A genius, I mean, they're really something - their way of seeing things and ideas are so different. That's not me at all! I'm no genius!

- Do you like your studies?

I guess I really don't think of them that way. I can only do what I'm good at. The Japanese transfer students, they know so much, and all I can think is just how cool that is! Nothing I could ever do! ......But you know, when the answer to something I've been thinking about for a looooong time just comes to me like that, for some reason, it makes me really happy! And when the next thing I don't understand comes along, I just think about it some more. I seem to like that sort of thing!

- (His eyes are shining!) I hear that you also tell fortunes, Mel.

Fortune-telling's my specialty, you know! I think I hit the mark on just about everything but myself. If you have anything you'd like me to see...like, if you've lost something, maybe...I might be of help!...I think. (nervous smile)

- Wow!

Um, about my fortunetelling - the power doesn't come from me. My mother and her father and mother and - all of them believed in a connection between the stars and all of us, and I can borrow that power, too. That's what my fortunetelling is!

- A mysterious power. ...What's your daily schedule like, Mel?

Well... In the morning, some days I get up really early, and some days, I get up late. The days I get up early, I'm up before the sun even rises! I eat my breakfast while watching the sun rise. Those days, I have a lot of fruit for breakfast - there're so many different kinds of fruit in America, and it all tastes so good! Then I go to the lab early, and I have a nap in the afternoon. The days I get up late, I do my research while eating a brunch I picked up along the way. Those days, I do research untl way late in the afternoon. Either way, once it's night, I look up at the starry sky. When I spend a long night looking at the sky, I usually get up late the next day.

- So you go at your own pace, I see. Is there anything, for example, on which you just can't compromise?

My clothes...I guess. Suits like those people are wearing over there? I don't really like those sort of clothes, so I don't wear them. But this clothing isn't really suited for the cold...so I don't really deal with winters well.

- I'm enchanted by the pretty designs!

Almost everyone wears clothes like this in my homeland. I feel the most comfortable in them, too. I made the accessories myself. I like making things on my own!

- Very clever! If you were on a date with a lady, where would you like to take her?

I'd like to show her around the island where I grew up! I think she'd really like it. ......I'd love it if she did. Then, I'd take her around to meet the people there. I'd know I'd like that! But I'd be happy wherever I went with her.

- And if you had to give a present to a lady, what would you like to give her?

I like making accessories, so...if I had a girlfriend, I'd like to make her an accessory! Earrings, a pendant...ha ha, that'd make me happy.

- How nice... What's your ideal woman like, Mel?

Hmmm...a kind woman. I'm shy around strangers, and even though I think I have to solve it myself, but at those times, if there were someone there to give me a little push forward, I know I'd just be so happy.

- Well, then, if you have a message for the ladies, let's hear it!

I don't know yet how we'll meet, but...I know I'll like you! I just have a feeling. I'm so happy that you've become our Angel of Hope. I can tell! The stars have told me - that you'll make the world - and me - happy.
