However: Dynasty Warriors games have utterly huge rosters (Wikipedia notes that the eighth installment boasts 83 playable characters), and...well, they're announcing a neoroma character right out of the gate, as one of the flagship charas. That's a strong sign Koei isn't gonna shy away from taking PCs from their dating sims.

So: There's an excellent chance that at least one Angelique character's going to make it into Musou Stars. Frankly, I'd put Oscar as a 1:1 bet at this point: he's the most popular Ange character in Japan; he's voiced by a venerable seiyuu who's been very active in promoting the Ange franchise; and he has an established history of swinging a sword around.

(Arios might be a good runner-up candidate, as Japan's other most popular Ange character who also is armed with a blade, but he has a strike against him in that he hasn't been in a recent game. (Maren, a four-year-old Otomate joint, doesn't count.) Rayne might also be a possibility, given that a new Neo Ange is supposed to be on its way, but that depends on how dedicated Koei is to promoting a game they're not publishing, which, so far, has been "not very.")

Another thing to consider: The modern Dynasty Warriors games have the option for English voices. If this bears fruit, then an Angelique character might for the first time be getting an official English voice.

Anyhow: this is all pie in the sky at this point. But I ask: which characters do you think might be in the game, and which characters do you want to be in the game? (I know the answer to the latter is "everyone," so let's go with "most want to be in the game.")

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:439077ext_362845Playing the older games, Retour and timeline question...2016-08-02T05:04:00Z2016-08-02T05:04:00Znerdypublic3Posted by: siriusstar.livejournal.com

Hello!

I used to post here ages ago. It is good to know the community is still here! I have been having a major Angelique Renaissance since re-watching the Neo Angelique anime in February and, much to my delight, finally getting to play an Angelique game with Retour. I've been fangirling it all alone to fervent fanfiction writing levels since March... I'm glad to find somewhere a bit active to talk about it.

Now I would really love to play some of the older games. I just bought the PC version of Etoile, and hopefully I can get to work on an old laptop. I imagine I should be able to attempt Neo Angelique and Maren when I get a PSP. (Are PSPs regionally locked? I am assuming that I should get a Japanese version.) What about Trois, Special 2 and Requiem? Is there any way to play them without buying old Japanese consoles and trying to get them to work with newer US TVs? I saw Requiem on a kind of sketchy website as being downloadable, but I didn't get it to work.

On Retour... I have a lot to say and am not sure where to start. lol. I will happily post a synopsis of Brian's parts, for those who can't play Retour, if there is any interest. It has its issues, but I kind of love his story. I wish I knew when his birthday is! It is a silly thing, but I like to know this stuff!

The most important (for my fanfic, anyway) question is... Is there ever mentioned anywhere just how much time passes on the continent in relation to the flying city? There is rather contradictory information. Brian says more than once, IIRC, that it has been decades... and there is a scene that indicates that is the case, but the priest doesn't age that much. He just goes from about 8 to perhaps 18 or so when I got the game to last over 100 days or so. I assumed that the priest has power like a Guardian's, which is why he ages minimally, but uncertain timelines bug me when writing anything.

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:438820ext_221533First, very vague Neo Angelique sequel details2016-07-31T11:13:00Z2016-07-31T11:13:00Zpublic2Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

Hey there, folks; the Brand New Summer event has come and gone, and according to Famitsu and Gamer, Koei released some...extremely broad details about the game:

- It's set two years after the first one
- The Aube Hunters have gathered together into a new manor
- The game is scheduled for release in 2017

And...that's it. There was also a promo image shown of Angelique & Rayne looking at each other, but no one's posted it yet. The official Twitter thinks the new Neoromance credit-card promotion is much more newsworthy. (The manga itself is up to read here until Feb. 5, 10:00 a.m. Japan time.) The compiled print edition of the Clavis, Lumiale, and Luva Secret Side stories, Angelique Retour Secret Side Vol. 2, has already been released.

Also: Miko Mitsuki has made noises to the effect that Luva's chapter is the last Secret Side manga. This would seem to be accurate, as there's no "next month" promo image on the Sho-Comi page like there has been in the past.

It'd be odd if so, though, because Zephel, Marcel, and Randy haven't gotten their turn. There's certainly no shortage of backstory source material for those characters: Zephel's dramatic introduction to the Sanctuary; Randy's rivalry with Oscar (whom they love to put in these manga) or how Randy's parents met (his dad was a prince, his mom a commoner, their love was forbidden and he had to give up his title and go off on a search to find her when she was sent away by his jealous mother); and I'm sure they could gin up something with Marcel's extensive family. The free Secret Side manga were meant to promote Retour's release, though, and now it's out; and I could think of one possible spoiler-related reason why they would not want to showcase these stories online for free. Will we see, maybe, a print-only Secret Side Vol. 3? I dunno; for now, though, Secret Side seems to be over.

Other stuff:

- The Sekai o Dakishimete variety CD is out, with songs by Brian, Marcel, Randy, Zephel, and Oscar, plus what appparently is a Brian-centric drama. There's also an upcoming event CD, which apparently features songs by Luva and Lumiale, plus a duet by Gerard & Silvan threatened. Tumblr user minobishe has posted promo videos for both CDs, with audio snippets, here.

In addition, there's a "Futari Dake no Ochakai" ("A Tea Party for Just the Two of Us") CD featuring a Clavis-Lumiale drama produced in association with the merch company Happy Kuji, but...well, see below.

- A bunch of Retour merchandise has been produced by Happy Kuji, an odd company that sells its products...well, I'm kind of not sure. Apparently, lottery tickets are involved, and the items are divided into "prize tiers," but the merchandise is sold in massive boxes that are about $500 U.S. and come with sets of all prize tiers included? I don't know if this is something that's aimed at retailers, and the lottery aspect comes into play at the retail level (like the old PP trading card packs), or what. Anyhow, the Clavis-Lumi CD is apparently an exclusive "preorder bonus" for the Happy Kuji packs, and...my head is hurting. I have to go lie down now. If anyone out there can actually explain Happy Kuji, please do so.

(ETA: Also, one of the prize tiers is an invitation to an event featuring what seems to be a live tea party drama that features Julious & Oscar, plus an apparent gift of a CD of the event. I need Advil.)

Anyhow, we outside of Japan can't purchase the Happy Kuji merch outside of the secondary market, but it's worth browsing their Twitter to see some of the weird stuff they've made. Guardian-inspired nail stickers?

- Speaking of bizarre promotions in which we outside Japan cannot participate: Koei has teamed with karaoke king Joysound for a promotional campaign where participants can win video games by singing Angelique character songs.

- Also, I noted this on the Tumblr, but just to repeat: Brian's backstory in Retour is starting to get out in the open, so you might want to play Retour sooner rather than later if you haven't gotten on that and want to remain unspoiled. (There's one Brian-centric post on Tumblr (not one I've reblogged on the Angmedia Tumblr) that makes an oblique reference to it; it's very obscure, so it might not even mean anything to you, but if it does, it seems to full-on spoil what's going on with him. Just be aware.)

Finally, it's late, but I'll leave with this Miko Mitsuki piece that she made to commemorate the Retour release:

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:437480ext_221533Luva's Everyday manga up2016-01-03T20:05:00Z2016-01-03T20:05:00Zpublic2Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

"Luva's Everyday" is now up - a one-and-done affair. I'm going to post this image for posterity, since the Media Create sales figures rotate out every week (click to enlarge):

These are the first-week sales figures. (Well, first half-week, since Retour released on the 17th, and the chart starts on the 14th.) Retour's exact numbers are not shown; sales figures are displayed only for the top 20 sellers, and Retour finished just out of that, at #23. Based on the sales of the games just above it, I think it can be inferred that Retour sold around 9,000 to 10,000 copies.

There are, though, some major caveats to this:

- While the limited editions are included in the total, it's not clear if PSP sales are as well. (The listing is labeled "Vita," and there's no PSP entry; I don't know if that's because PSP sales are included with the Vita listing or if not enough PSP editions were sold to chart or if because PSP sales flat-out aren't listed in the data.)
- I don't know if Media Create tabulates download sales, which seem to be the great stumbling block of video game sales tabulation. Their website states that they get their information from the "bottom up" with "interviews & surveys," suggesting that their info comes from local retailers, which makes it seem unlikely that download sales are included. (Note, though, that Japan is notoriously more enamored with physical media than other markets, meaning that download sales are likely to be a smaller slice of the pie there than they would be elsewhere.)
ETA: SiliconEra, at least, claims that Media Create can't track download sales because, as we might have guessed, that info is Sony-proprietary, so there you go.
- At 7,344 yen, Retour's sticker price is on the high end of sales prices for the games charting - and that's not counting the limited editions, which sold for many times that (up to 35,000 yen for the Gamecity special edition). Though I'm sure Koei wouldn't say no to traditionally high sales, it did seem to be taking the tack of selling fewer copies at higher prices, which is a strategy it's used with other franchises (the latest Romance of the Three Kingdoms release etc.). That said, Koei did seem to be pushing Retour quite a bit on the larger Neoromance site etc., which suggests they were going for wider appeal to some degree.

Other things to consider:
- the special editions seemed to be selling rather briskly during the preorder period based on sellouts (though we don't know the stock each store had; CD Japan mentioned in a reply to an inquiry I sent about their lack of stock that "the manufacturer accepted orders from a very large number of stores in existence," suggesting that sellouts may have been due to stock being spread thin);
- Koei is moving ahead with plans to feature Retour at the various tome game festivals and release variety CDs etc., though it's unknown at this point whether that's because they consider it a sales success or because they're committed. Who knows.
- and, as huldukatt notes, we don't have comparative info on how other otome games sold in their first weeks. (I think Maren sold something like 5,000 in its first week, though that's obviously not a benchmark for sales in 2015 of a game from this studio with these expectations.) Here's Gematsu's archive of past Media Create sales figures, if anyone wants to comb through for otome games; they record only the top 20, though.

ETA: Famitsu data:

Famitsu has the game at #18 for the week, selling 10,180 copies. Like Media Create, they're mum on how PSP sales figure in, and they also don't seem to count download sales, getting their info from individual retailers. They do, however, have one additional piece of info that Media Create doesn't (at least in its public data): the sell-through rate. Retour's was very high: 80-100%, meaning that it didn't disappoint what Koei and retailers were expecting from initial shipments. That's one good piece of news.

Also, Dengeki Online puts Retour's sales at 10,250, with the same limitations as above. It seems that ~10,200 is a good guess for Retour sales, apparently minus the PSP and download sides of the equation.

Anyhow, that's the news. If you have any insight, feel free to weigh in.

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:436540ext_221533Guardian Xmas gift party on Twitter2015-12-25T21:08:00Z2015-12-25T21:08:00Zpublic0Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

Hey there! Hope everyone is having or has had a good day. The official Retour Twitter had a Christmas skit where Dia had the Guardians participate in a blind gift exchange: everyone brought a gift, and everyone received a gift at random. I'm sure this will go swimmingly!

Zephel: Hey, OSCAR!! This present YOURS? What's the big idea, givin' me this frilly ribbon!?! You know we're all MEN here 'cept for the Queen candidates, RIGHT?! What'm I supposed to DO with this?!?

Oscar: Hmph - I put such thought in that gift, and it didn't even reach one of the Queen candidates. What a pity. I received...a picture frame? ...With a saying in it. It's beautiful handwriting, but...hm? This is Julious's handwriting! "Never forget your beginner's mind."*

* - "Shoshin wasureru bekarazu" is a traditional Japanese proverb; it means never to lose the eagerness, dedication, and openmindedness that you bring to your first undertaking of something.

Julious: Ah, I see my calligraphy found its way to Oscar. Take those words to heart, and put your best into the performance of your duties in the future. I received...ah, a sports towel, I see. It's quite pleasing to the touch. I'll make use of it when I go horseback riding on my next holiday.

Randy: Oh, that went to Julious! I just love those towels - I'm always using them! I thought they'd be a useful gift for anybody. I got...a book. An Overview of the Study of the Roles and Duties of Queens and Guardians. ...Wow, this is really thick and looks really difficult.

Luva: Ahhh, I see that went to you, Randy! I was trying to think of something that'd be good for anyone...and that was the only thing that came to mind! Be sure to study it carefully, now! ...Oh, my - I see I've received some herb tea! It has such a delightful aroma!

Lumiale: That is from me, Luva. The herbs will soothe and heal your soul. I received...ahh, some seeds! If these are from you, Marcel, I'm sure they will bring forth some beautiful flowers. You will have to tell me how to grow them!

Marcel: Just plant them in a sunny place, and give them water every day with love! I know YOU won't have a problem with that, Lumiale! The present I got is...a wrench? C'mon, Zephel! You know I don't use screws!

Olivie: Ah ha ha, SORRY, Marcel! Get together with Zephel and try to think of a use for it! I got...this is pretty heavy...hah, a blackout curtain? Just what I wanted - lucky me! But I don't need to guess who gave me this, do I.

Clavis: That's mine. Use it as you wish. ...I seem to have drawn your gift, Olivie. Soothing aromatic oil...not bad. You have good taste...though I'm not planning to adopt your fashion sense.

Rosalia gets a teddy bear from Limoges, thus continuing the teddy bear epidemic - though we're not told what Limoges got from Rosalia.

Brian: Turkey: cooked to perfection. Excellent. Some mashed potatoes to go with it, and the cranberry sauce that I simmered for two hours - what could taste better? And the cake is decorated perfectly, if I do say so myself. --What am I doing; I'll never be able to eat all this by myself!

--And then Limoges shows up. I like the idea that Limoges just bounced from the party and went to Brian's. More importantly, though: Brian, what were you doing to that cranberry sauce that you had it on the stove for two hours? Did your arm fall off while you were stirring it so that it didn't burn at the bottom of the pan? Do your burners top out at "lukewarm"?

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:436460ext_221533Angelique Retour variety CD scheduled for release2015-12-24T17:52:00Z2015-12-24T17:52:00Zpublic0Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

Hope everyone's having a good holiday! As per the post title, there's been a new variety CD for Angelique Retour scheduled: Angelique Retour ~Sekai o Dakishimete~ (Angelique Retour ~Embracing the World~). The CD will feature a long-form drama featuring Brian, plus five character songs from Randy, Oscar, Zephel, Marcel, and Brian. It's scheduled for release on January 27.

Also, to be released on Jan. 26: the second Secret Side manga. I take it this means Luva's getting only one chapter? (The Clavis translations will be released in a couple days; I've been a bit busy here.)

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:436117ext_221533Minor Retour site update: Brian stuff, wallpaper2015-12-21T08:53:00Z2015-12-21T08:53:00Zpublic0Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

Angelique Retour has been released, yet site updates continue!

- The System page (fourth option) has been updated with a picture of Brian's cabin, but we saw that in the "Coffee Thief" video. So I'm glad Brian can keep up dramawise with the established love interests.

-There's a pic in the Gallery (sixth option) of Brian acting all creepy with Limoges, railing at her in the caption for having faith in the Guardians and ranting about how the time's coming when everyone will know that the Guardians & Queen are powerless to save the universe. So!

- There's also a wallpaper of the boxart up on the Special (seventh option) page.

Also, it's Oscar's birthday today, so there's a celebration up on the Twitter, complete with pic of Julious smiling. Among these OSTs are a bunch of Haruka albums. I know that most Haruka fans have probably downloaded the entire discography already, but if you'd like to be legal for a bunch of songs, this is a very economical way to do so.

You do have an Amazon Japan account to be able to buy from the sale (accounts from other territories won't work). Here's a guide that shows you how to set one up. You also have to register with a Japanese mailing address; the one in the example here will work. (You can pay with any credit card; Amazon Japan doesn't cross-reference the address, so it doesn't matter if the Japanese address you provide is fake.)

The sale includes selections from other series like Phantasy Star Online, Resident Evil, Bayonetta, Persona, and more, so it's worth taking a look even if you're not a Haruka fan.

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:435552ext_221533infini "Carry on Your Dream" performance; Angemedia Tumblr (ETA: Playthrough of Retour opening up)2015-12-16T18:02:00Z2015-12-16T18:02:00Zpublic0Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

Well, it's Dec. 17, Retour release day, in Japan. To sate our longing until our own copies arrive, here's a just-released performance of the theme song, "Carry on Your Dream," performed by Infini at the Halloween Party event:

[Invalid lj-embed id 27]

Other thing: I'e registered a Tumblr to serve as a supplement to this community. I don't need to tell anyone here that Tumblr's real popular, and though it can be hard to find at times (the "angelique" tag is a bit of a mess, given all the other fandoms & real-life people using it), a lot of good people are doing a lot of neat Angelique stuff on it. There's also the issue of LiveJournal as a platform in many regions having a considerably decreased profile, and that it's mostly just me talking on here. We get about 30 unique people a day coming through the LiveJournal page (a lot of them from countries where English isn't the language of the realm, which might explain a reticence to communicate from certain folks), so there is still merit to posting stuff on LJ - but I'd like for us to reach more people, too.

The problem is that Tumblr doesn't allow the management of a community: you have to reblog to comment on a post (as they removed replies, though you can do CSS tricks to get them back in a limited form), which makes it cumbersome to hold a discussion, and though you can set it up where other users can submit posts, it's not the system we have here, where any member can post easily and there are mods to fix stuff if things go haywire. Tumblr's not set up for anything collaborative or long-form, and it's not a replacement for something like this.

So: If you want a post on the Tumblr, use the Submit feature, send me a message, contact me here or there - anything. I'm not looking to set up another comm where I'm the only voice most of the time. Or, heck - just do the standard Tumblr protocol of making a post on your own Tumblr & tagging it "angelique" or whatever or shooting me a message. I'd like to use the Angemedia Tumblr also as a place to gather Angelique Tumblr content - like the "fyeah(fandom)" concept - since, as mentioned, picking out Angelique stuff can be a problem on there. Let me know what you think!

ETA: The dependable huldukatt has found a playthrough of the opening of Retour on Nicovideo; click here for details.

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:435261ext_221533NEW NEO ANGELIQUE GAME COMING, and no one posted about this? I have veritably yearned for it...
As a Queen candidate, you must feel somewhat...no...feel greatly overwhelmed, but at a time like this, you cannot afford to hesitate.
The fate of the universe rests on your shoulders. Do your best, and aim for the throne."

This also reveals that you have to be on a New Game + for Brian to be romanceable.

(As an aside, the whole "make certain paths inaccessible on the first playthrough" convention in visual novels kind of drives me nuts. I know they want there to be material that you can't see the first time through to encourage replays, but, game companies: we're not Dr. Manhattan. There's always going to be content we can't see the first time through in a branching-path game by definition, because we can follow only one path at a time. Completely blocking off paths until you've played through the game a certain number of times is just a time-waster.)

- The System section (fourth option) has a pic of Zephel's office, which we've seen in the videos. The larger pic makes it clearer that his trademark hovercraft and small robot are present. There's also a bit on "Friendship Events," which are kind of ill-explained but seem to revolve around Limoges helping Guardians with their personal problems and thereby becoming closer to them. These seem to be initiated by Limoges going to the park and seeing prophetic images of a certain Guardian in the fountain, visiting the Guardian to find him out of sorts, then seeing the fountain images come to pass as she helps him out and the event progresses.

- There are a bunch of new clips in the Movies section (fifth option), as you probably already know, since they've been releasing two preview clips per day in the lead-up to the release. Perhaps the highlight, though, is a clip where Limoges goes to Brian's cabin and steals his cafe latte.

- The Gallery (sixth option) has a pic of Lumiale (dang, they are not getting his face right) and a nice group shot:

- Also, they claim to have updated the Product Information (eighth option), but it's just info that there's a form in the special editions for reserving seats at one of the live events, which doesn't really pertain to most of us.

Finally, the Retour Twitter claims that Famitsu gave Angelique Retour a Platinum award, meaning that it got 35-39 out of 40. Now, Famitsu is a notoriously lax scorer, but...well, that's still a pretty high score! Given the rush on the bonus editions, the signs seem to be boding well for the game!

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:434757ext_221533Small Retour update: Brian & twins movies, Niconico Retour livestream show2015-12-08T08:49:00Z2015-12-08T08:49:00Zpublic3Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

The Angelique Retour site has been updated with mini-movies featuring Brian and the twins. The movie on the Scrappy-Doos doesn't have any new info, but the one with Brian features him caught in a dimensional rift, with Limoges coming to save him (or, maybe, thrown in herself, who knows). It seems to be a place of imprisonment, and the scene appparently comes from rather late in a Brian relationship, as Brian's all touchy-feely and telling Limoges not to cry "until [they] find a way out of here."

Also, there's going to be a Retour livestream starting...well, sometime on December 10/11th. The time given when you don't log in is "26:50," which doesn't exist, and when I logged in to "timeshift" the start time to my local time zone, it came up with something nonsensical. It makes no difference, though, since from what Nicovideo's lousy site tells me, you can't watch it live unless you're signed up for the site's premium service; if you have a regular account, you can only watch the stream once 30 minutes have expired after it's ended, and then your viewing rights expire permanently 10 days after that. Keep on with your needlessly complex, counterproductive copyright protection schemes, Japan.

ETA: Never mind; Nicovideo has changed its tune and is now saying that you have to have Premium to watch the finished broadcasts, too. Good gravy.

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:434573ext_221533Clavis Secret Side manga pt. 3 up2015-12-04T20:06:00Z2015-12-04T20:06:00Zpublic1Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

Here. It's nothing huge, but it shows how the portraits animate - the standard visual-novel way. You can also hear snippets of character themes, and see Zephel's office, which is the only one that hasn't been posted yet.

If, however, you click on the red "CLICK!" box that appears at the end of the video, you'll be taken to a free holiday smartphone wallpaper featuring a random Neoromance love interest - not just from Ange, but Neo Ange, Haruka, and Corda, too. This post was prompted by my own recent web excursion to get Retour (yeah, I know; just now?), where I discovered that a lot of shops are sold out of various editions. I guess Retour's gonna do pretty well for Koei!

But that doesn't help us apparent late shoppers, so, onward:

( Cut )

If you know of any options I didn't mention above, let me know in comments!

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2017-04-07:2949326:433444ext_221533Small Retour site update2015-11-25T21:32:00Z2015-11-25T21:32:00Zpublic1Posted by: indigozeal.livejournal.com

A day late, but here are the newest updates to the Angelique Retour site:

- New voice samples for the Guardians under the Characters section (third option in the menu) - mostly love stuff, but we all know what they sound like, so onward!
- A picture of Randy's office in the System section (fourth option) - really beautiful. There are also special events with the twin butlers. Joy.
- A new picture each of Oscar and Zephel in the Gallery (sixth option).
- Pics of a theme you can get for your Vita with Retour in Product Information (eighth option). Apparently, you also get codes for some freebies in Koei's Haruka and Corda mobile games.

Since that was a small update, let's have a look at other Retour stuff around the net:

- More adventures in event merchandise we will never be able to buy. We are forever denied the glory of Rosalia glowsticks.
- The Retour Twitter has been posting images of early Hachiko Hachiroku designs for the characters. They're up to Oscar as of this writing, and I find that all-in-black design really striking. Would that they had kept the slimmer profile of the boots. (Also, that sketch on the right is Maren as heck.) Other points: not knowing what the heck to do with Randy; Julious's strangely messy hair.
- Tumblr scan source mouthful kiminosekaisoshitewatashinosekai posted a Girl's Style article where Luva gives his impressions of the cast.
- Speaking of Tumblr scans, its2amandimustdraw translated a fun "Which Guardian is for you?" flowchart from one of the mags. (Lumiale for me, apparently.)
- Also, this isn't new, but you might want to poke around the Koei wiki. A few diligent maintainers have been adding a number of Angelique articles over time, and there's a good selection of material.
- Parting shot: Coffee art.

comments
